Becky’s Plane

July 23rd, 2010 by Ian in StudentsBronwyn and Kenny recently took part in this years Prince’s Trust Residential. The students decided this year to try somewhere different and chose Seaview in Weymouth as their destination. Although this presented some problems we managed to get around these and a fantastic time was had by all. The residential was not as rigid as last year’s itinerary for challenges and activities but we all agreed that the putting up of Chris’s mammoth tent ticked all the boxes for team work!! We even managed to squeeze in the England game on a big screen at the camp. This turned out to be the only England game we won and created a fabulous atmosphere. It was a sad goodbye to Bronwyn and Kenny on the last morning and we wish them both all the best for the future.

The students recently had their folders of work moderated in Bristol, all six students entered gained a Bronze Award. The moderators were so impressed with the quality of work, that they have requested that all the folders be resubmitted next term for a Silver Award!! I’m very proud of all my XL students and their achievements, I look forward to my new XL group being as successful next year.

Summer Fun
July 22nd, 2010 by PhilS in StudentsAs the summer holidays are now upon us, and I’m sure the weather will turn to the worst as it always does, I thought I would post links to all those great bits of FREE software that are so invaluable to us all here at the centre.
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ Photoshop type photo software. A must for all computers
http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/ Game maker, great fun for making your own video ganes, it can also be used to make 2d animations, lots of tutorials on you tube. Dont just play, create!!
http://www.inkscape.org/ Inkscape is the illustration software that we use for all those vector graphic images.
http://freeartsoftware.com/ truespace, the 3d modelling software is still available but requires a little bit of finding. Go to the link, go to the 3d tab, scroll through the pages, its on about page three and its Truespace 3.2, this is the full free version, if you go to truespaces homepage then you only get a demo of the latest version.
http://www.acidplanet.com/downloads/xpress/ acid express is loop based music software, it’s free but you need to go find loops to use, they are out there, so get hunting.
Whilst every effort has been made to ensure these links are reputable, and I have downloaded from all of them without adverse effect, Slc and DCC cannot accept any responsibility for their content.
Have a great holiday.

Photographing Phlowers

Flowers are most definatley the order of the day in photography and with the weather we’ve been having, is it any wonder.
Leah created this dynamic image with a photo of a gazinia and a bit of gimp magic.
Good work Leah. Well done
Cybermask
July 1st, 2010 by PhilS in Students
Rebecca has been learning and working with photography and has produced this wonderful piece of digital art.
We took photos of computer parts, which the boys in D+T kindly took apart for us, cropped them and composed them into a computer collage, based around the theme of ‘masks’.
Bex is really developing a good understanding of this type of art and producing some fantastic work.
Well done Bex, you should be really pleased with yourself.
Storyville
June 30th, 2010 by PhilS in StudentsThe city was dead. Like nothing I have seen before, it was a long way away from the streets of London I was used to, it was almost as if no one had ever lived here. It was cold and lifeless. There was no sound apart from our single footsteps echoing through this industrial graveyard. The shapes that were left towering out of the ground could only remind me of tombstones, soulless structures that had no purpose anymore.
We were sent to Chernobyl by one of the world’s leading nuclear companies in London, England. The journey here wasn’t too stressful, the plane was calm and so comforting, I think it made us all forget the daunting task ahead. Researching in such an empty shell of a city was near enough impossible I have no idea what we will find. When we stepped off the plane we were greeted by our guide, his name was Borris Schaueff, but he allowed us to call him Pudds. He had pale skin that was a ghostly shade of white; he had light brown hair with a few specs of grey. He didn’t look like the sort of tour guide you would normally expect to meet, I was so used to the happy and bubbly guides, now Pudds was nothing like that, and every time he looked at me I felt slightly uncomfortable. He was eerie and weird. This was nothing like me, at home I’m probably the most confident person you would ever meet, I like to say I live in the fast lane trying everything I can in life once. My motto has always been, you have one life so live it to the full.
Me and the rest of the team who I had known for a few years now all jumped into Pudds’s truck and set off to the city of death, that’s what everyone we had told about our expedition described it as.
Great piece of writing from a year 10 student.
